SWEP Wig Subsidy Victoria

SWEP Wig Subsidy — Financial Assistance for Victorians

If you live in Victoria and are experiencing permanent or long-term hair loss due to a disability, illness, or age-related condition, the State-wide Equipment Program (SWEP) may be able to help fund a wig. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is SWEP?

SWEP wig subsidy in Victoria explained — eligibility, the application process, and how Lace Fronts Australia can support your application. Find out more.State-wide Equipment Program (SWEP) is a Victorian Government program, funded by the Department of Health and administered by Grampians Health Ballarat (formerly Ballarat Health Services). SWEP provides subsidised assistive technology, equipment, and modifications to eligible Victorians to support independence and quality of life — and wigs fall under this category for people with permanent or long-term hair loss.

How Is SWEP Different to Other State Programs?

One important thing to know about SWEP is that you cannot apply directly yourself. Referral must come through a qualified Assistive Technology Practitioner — this can include an Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Podiatrist, Continence Nurse, Lymphoedema Practitioner, or other registered health professional who is credentialed to prescribe through SWEP. This practitioner will assess your needs and submit the application on your behalf.

How the Funding Works

SWEP operates as a subsidy, not full coverage — meaning there may be a gap between the funded amount and the total cost of your wig, which you would need to cover directly. SWEP also does not provide retrospective funding, so it’s essential to have your application approved and an order placed before any wig is purchased. Exact subsidy amounts can change, so we recommend confirming current funding levels directly with SWEP or your AT Practitioner.

How to Apply

1. See a qualified Assistive Technology Practitioner. This could be through your GP referral, hospital, or community health service.

2. Get assessed. Your practitioner will assess your needs and determine the right type of wig and funding pathway.

3. Get a quote from us. We will provide a formal quote for your chosen wig to support the application.

4. Application submitted. Your practitioner submits the application and quote to SWEP on your behalf.

5. Order placed. Once approved, SWEP will raise a purchase order directly with us as the supplier.

We’re Here to Support You
