Tasmania Wig Subsidy — Financial Assistance for Cancer and Alopecia Patients

If you live in Tasmania and are experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatment or alopecia, there are a number of financial assistance and free wig options worth knowing about.

Tasmanian Government Wig Concession

Financial assistance is available through the Tasmanian Government to cancer and alopecia patients who are referred by a doctor and hold an eligible concession card. DVA Veterans Card holders should contact DVA directly on 1800 838 372 (1800 VETERAN) to check their specific eligibility, as criteria may differ.

Private Health Insurance

If you hold private health insurance, it’s worth checking with your insurer first, as some policies offer a rebate or contribution toward wigs under “aids and appliances” or similar extras cover — this may be claimable in addition to, or instead of, government assistance depending on your policy.

Cancer Council Tasmania’s Free Wig Library

For Tasmanians experiencing hair loss specifically due to cancer treatment, Cancer Council Tasmania’s Supportive Care Services offer access to a free wig, fitted by a trained staff member, at their centres in Hobart, Launceston, and Devonport. They also provide headwear and turbans. This can be a wonderful option alongside, or instead of, a purchased wig — you can reach their Supportive Care Team on 1300 65 65 85.
