A hair topper is a piece that covers the top of your head and clips into your own hair. Unlike a wig, which replaces all of your hair, a topper works with what you already have — adding coverage and volume through the crown and parting, while your own hair stays along the sides and back.

For anyone experiencing thinning at the part line or crown, a topper is often the most natural looking option available, because the hair framing your face is your own. It lifts, covers and blends, rather than replacing.

Most of our clients tell us the same thing after their first fitting: they expected it to feel like wearing something, and instead it just felt like having their hair back.

A topper is ideal if you still have hair through the sides and back of your head, and the thinning you want to cover is on top — a widening part, a thinning crown, or hair that has gradually lost density over time.

It is less suited to more extensive hair loss. If your own hair has thinned significantly all over, or there is not enough at the sides to blend into and hold the clips securely, a wig will give you a far better result. There is no benefit in forcing a topper to do a wig's job, and we would always rather tell you that honestly than sell you the wrong piece.

If you are not sure which side of that line you fall on, use the Ask us about this topper button above, or book a private consultation at our Gold Coast boutique. It is a conversation worth having before you buy.

The base is the panel the hair is attached to, and it decides how much of your head the topper covers. A smaller base gives light coverage through the part line. A larger base covers more of the crown and gives you more room to move your parting around.

The simplest way to choose is to look in the mirror and work out the area you want covered — from the front hairline back, and from side to side across the widest point of thinning. Your base needs to be at least that size, and it is usually better to go slightly larger than slightly smaller.

EDIT ME: list the base sizes you stock and what each one covers. A photo or diagram works better than words here — set the media type below to Image.

If you would like help working it out, send us a photo through the chat and we will tell you honestly which size we would recommend.

Toppers attach with small pressure-sensitive clips that grip your own hair. There is no glue, no tape, and nothing complicated.

Part your hair where you want the topper to sit, position the front edge slightly back from your natural hairline, and secure the front clip first. Then work backwards, clipping the sides and back into place. That order is what keeps the front sitting flat and looking natural.

The first couple of times will feel fiddly. By the third or fourth, you will do it without thinking.

EDIT ME: this row is the strongest candidate for a video on the whole page. Set the media type below to Video and add your CDN link.

Getting a topper to disappear comes down to three things: colour, parting and a little bit of styling.

Colour matters most. A topper does not need to match your own hair perfectly, but it does need to sit in the same tonal family — warm with warm, cool with cool. If you are between shades, going very slightly lighter at the root usually blends more forgivingly than going darker.

Parting is the giveaway most people miss. Match the direction of your own part rather than fighting it.

Styling is the last five per cent. A quick brush through where the topper meets your own hair, or a light wave through both, softens the join and makes it invisible.

Not confident on colour? Send us a photo in natural light through the chat and we will help you match it.

EDIT ME — THIS ROW NEEDS YOUR SPECIFICS. Cover what you actually offer: whether you cut and shape toppers before dispatch, whether you can reduce density or shape a fringe, whether there is a cost, and whether it affects returns.

Draft to work from once you have added the detail:

Every head of hair is different, and a topper straight out of the box is a starting point rather than a finished result. We are always happy to shape a piece so it sits the way you want it to. Just let us know before you order, or use the Ask us about this topper button above to talk it through.

EDIT ME — PLEASE WRITE THIS ROW YOURSELF, AND BE SPECIFIC. Whether a piece is heat safe depends on the fibre, and only you know that for each product. Getting it wrong means a customer ruins a topper by following advice on your own page.

Background you can use: synthetic fibre and human hair behave completely differently under heat. A straightener that is perfectly safe on human hair can permanently melt or frizz non heat-friendly synthetic fibre, and it cannot be undone.

This row needs four things. Whether this piece is heat friendly, stated plainly. If it is, the maximum safe temperature. If it is not, what to do instead — synthetic fibre holds its own style, so it returns to shape after washing with no heat at all. And whether hot tools should be kept away from the base and clips regardless.

Synthetic hair is washed quite differently to human hair, and the good news is that it is easier — the fibre holds its own style, so it comes back to shape on its own.

Use cool water, never hot. Add a small amount of gentle shampoo made for synthetic hair, and let the piece soak rather than rubbing or scrubbing it. Rinse gently, in the same direction the hair falls. Squeeze the water out rather than wringing or twisting, then lay the topper on a towel to take out the excess.

Air dry on a stand, away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not brush it while it is wet. Once it is dry, the style will have returned by itself.

How often depends on how much you wear it — every fifteen to twenty wears is a reasonable guide, or sooner if you have been using product.

EDIT ME: name the shampoo and conditioner you recommend and link to them. You stock hair care already, and this is the right place to mention it.
